The long answer is that \u00abit understands Greek\u00bb hides five or six different problems, none of which are solved by choosing a more expensive model.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#039;re thinking about putting AI into your eShop service, it&#039;s worth knowing exactly where it stumbles \u2014 because that&#039;s where sales are lost, not in impressive demos.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%CE%A4%CE%BF_%CF%80%CF%81%CF%8E%CF%84%CE%BF_%CE%B5%CE%BC%CF%80%CF%8C%CE%B4%CE%B9%CE%BF_%CE%BF_%CF%80%CE%B5%CE%BB%CE%AC%CF%84%CE%B7%CF%82_%CE%B4%CE%B5%CE%BD_%CE%B3%CF%81%CE%AC%CF%86%CE%B5%CE%B9_%C2%AB%CF%83%CF%89%CF%83%CF%84%CE%AC%C2%BB_%CE%B5%CE%BB%CE%BB%CE%B7%CE%BD%CE%B9%CE%BA%CE%AC\"><\/span>The first obstacle: the client does not write &quot;correct&quot; Greek<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>In demos, the question is always clear: \u00abWhat is your return policy?\u00bb In fact, the chat accepts this:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u00ab&quot;exete to mple se 42 h mono se 41&quot;\u00bb<\/em><\/p>\n<p>No punctuation, zero accents, Greeklish, abbreviations, and a question that is actually two. A system that expects pure Greek answers here \u00abI didn\u2019t understand your question\u00bb \u2014 and the customer leaves. The goal isn\u2019t to understand the language; it\u2019s to understand <strong>How Greek customers really type on their mobile phones<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Greeklish_%CE%BC%CE%B9%CE%B1_%CE%B3%CE%BB%CF%8E%CF%83%CF%83%CE%B1_%CF%87%CF%89%CF%81%CE%AF%CF%82_%CF%80%CF%81%CF%8C%CF%84%CF%85%CF%80%CE%BF\"><\/span>Greeklish: a language without a standard<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Greeklish doesn&#039;t have rules. It has habits. The same word is spelled four or five ways, depending on the age and habit of each person:<\/p>\n<p><strong>shoes<\/strong> \u2192 papoutsia, papoytsia, papoutsja, papoutsa, pap8outsia<\/p>\n<p><strong>unlocking<\/strong> \u2192 xekleidoma, xekleidwma, 3ekleidoma<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab\u03b8\u00bb becomes th or 8. \u00ab\u03be\u00bb becomes x, ks or 3. \u00ab\u03c9\u00bb becomes o or w. There is no right way \u2014 there is only what the customer typed at that moment. It changes the word:<\/p>\n<p><strong>When<\/strong> Is my order coming? (question about time)<br \/>\nhe didn&#039;t come <strong>When<\/strong> my order (complaint)<\/p>\n<p>Two completely different situations, same letters. And since almost no one puts accents in chat, the system has to figure out the difference from context \u2014 not from spelling. The same goes for \u00ab\u03cc,\u03c4\u03b9\u00bb and \u00ab\u03bf\u03c4\u03b9\u00bb, for \u00ab\u03bc\u03b1\u03c2\u00bb and \u00ab\u03bc\u03b1\u03c2\u00bb, and for any word written in capital letters: \u03a0\u039f\u03a4\u0395, \u03a0\u0391\u03a1\u0391\u039b\u0391\u0392\u0399, \u0391\u039a\u03a5\u03a1\u039f\u03a3\u0399 \u2014 capital letters in Greek lose the accent by default.<\/p>\n<p>There is also a more insidious trap: the final sigma. \u00aborder\u00bb and \u00aborders\u00bb are two different characters (s and s) to the computer, and therefore two different words. If it is not normalized, the search returns empty for a reason that no one will ever guess by looking at the screen.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%CE%9C%CE%AF%CE%B1_%CE%BB%CE%AD%CE%BE%CE%B7_%CE%B4%CE%AD%CE%BA%CE%B1_%CE%BC%CE%BF%CF%81%CF%86%CE%AD%CF%82\"><\/span>One word, ten forms<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>English has two or three forms per noun. Greek has dozens, because everything is inflected: nouns, adjectives, articles, numerals.<\/p>\n<p><strong>the shoe, the shoe, the shoes, the shoes, the shoes, the shoes<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Your catalog says \u00abMen\u2019s leather ankle boots.\u00bb The customer asks, \u00abDo you have men\u2019s leather ankle boots?\u00bb To a human, it\u2019s obviously the same. To a system that searches by word, it\u2019s not\u2014unless someone has taught the machine that all of these forms point to the same thing.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%CE%A4%CE%B1_%CE%BC%CE%B9%CF%83%CE%AC_%CE%B1%CE%B3%CE%B3%CE%BB%CE%B9%CE%BA%CE%AC_%CE%BC%CE%AD%CF%83%CE%B1_%CF%83%CF%84%CE%B1_%CE%B5%CE%BB%CE%BB%CE%B7%CE%BD%CE%B9%CE%BA%CE%AC\"><\/span>Half English in Greek<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The Greek e-commerce customer speaks a mixed language, and does so without thinking about it:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u00ab&quot;I checked out but didn&#039;t receive a confirmation, should I refresh or try again with another card?&quot;\u00bb<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In one sentence: English terms with a Greek inflection (\u00abI checked out\u00bb), technical jargon, and a question that hides anxiety about a payment. The system needs to understand both languages at once, not respond in English because it saw English words, and recognize that a general answer is not enough here \u2014 it needs real verification of the order.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%CE%A4%CE%BF_%CE%BA%CF%81%CF%85%CF%86%CF%8C_%CE%BA%CF%8C%CF%83%CF%84%CE%BF%CF%82_%CF%80%CE%BF%CF%85_%CE%B4%CE%B5%CE%BD_%CF%83%CF%85%CE%B6%CE%B7%CF%84%CE%AC_%CE%BA%CE%B1%CE%BD%CE%B5%CE%AF%CF%82\"><\/span>The hidden cost that no one discusses<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>There is also a purely economic aspect. Language models don&#039;t read words \u2014 they break the text into pieces (tokens). English, which dominates the training data, breaks very economically. Greek breaks into significantly more pieces for the same meaning.<\/p>\n<p>In practice, this means three things: each Greek conversation costs more than the corresponding English one, less content fits in the conversation&#039;s &quot;memory&quot;, and responses are slower. It&#039;s one of the reasons why a cloud chatbot with a per-use fee charges a different bill in Greece than what the English pricing page promises.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%CE%93%CE%B9%CE%B1%CF%84%CE%AF_%CE%B4%CE%B5%CE%BD_%CE%BB%CF%8D%CE%BD%CE%B5%CF%84%CE%B1%CE%B9_%CE%BC%CE%B5_%C2%AB%CE%BA%CE%B1%CE%BB%CF%8D%CF%84%CE%B5%CF%81%CE%BF_%CE%BC%CE%BF%CE%BD%CF%84%CE%AD%CE%BB%CE%BF%C2%BB\"><\/span>Why it&#039;s not solved with a &quot;better model&quot;\u00ab<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Here&#039;s where we want to be honest. Modern models speak Greek just fine \u2014 that&#039;s not the problem. The problem is that <strong>they don&#039;t know your data<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>A model who doesn&#039;t see your catalog has no way of knowing if you have the blue in 42. She&#039;ll answer anyway \u2014 politely, in impeccable Greek, and probably wrong. The language was perfect; the information was fantastic. For a customer waiting for their order, that&#039;s worse than &quot;I don&#039;t know.&quot;.<\/p>\n<p>The difference, then, is not how well the system speaks Greek. It is <strong>Where does he get the answer from?<\/strong>: from his general knowledge or from your own database, your own inventory, your own policies.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%CE%A4%CE%B9_%CF%83%CE%B7%CE%BC%CE%B1%CE%AF%CE%BD%CE%B5%CE%B9_%CE%B1%CF%85%CF%84%CF%8C_%CF%83%CF%84%CE%B7%CE%BD_%CF%80%CF%81%CE%AC%CE%BE%CE%B7\"><\/span>What does this mean in practice?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>If you&#039;re evaluating an AI solution for a Greek eShop, try it like this:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Write Greeklish.<\/strong> Without accents, with mistakes, as the customer writes on the bus.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ask something that changes daily.<\/strong> Stock, delivery time, order status. If it doesn&#039;t know, it&#039;s not connected to anything.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ask something he doesn&#039;t know.<\/strong> The correct system says &quot;I don&#039;t know, I&#039;m connecting you to a human.&quot; The dangerous one invents.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mix up the languages.<\/strong> See if he&#039;ll answer you in English because you said &quot;checkout.&quot;.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%CE%A0%CF%8E%CF%82_%CF%84%CE%BF_%CF%80%CF%81%CE%BF%CF%83%CE%B5%CE%B3%CE%B3%CE%AF%CE%B6%CE%BF%CF%85%CE%BC%CE%B5_%CE%B5%CE%BC%CE%B5%CE%AF%CF%82\"><\/span>How do we approach it?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>\u039f <strong>Talos<\/strong> was built from the ground up for Greek businesses \u2014 and the key design decision wasn\u2019t linguistic, it was architectural: it runs on a private server, reads your own data, and nothing leaves your infrastructure.
